Rainer Balbach held leading positions in production planning, purchasing and plant management at companies such as Daimler and BRP Rotax. He reports on the enormous change that is taking place: While the industry is confronted with new requirements, e.g. for drive technologies, AI and VR are finding their way into manufacturing. His interest is the interface of cost calculations & engineering - that's why he is involved with Tset.
Rainer Balbach began his career at Daimler AG after completing his engineering studies and doctorate in 1988. He held various management positions in production planning, purchasing and plant management for over two decades. In 2017, he moved to BRP Rotax as purchasing director. Since 2020, he has been passing on his knowledge of holistic supply chain management for new drive systems, in particular the development of supply chains, as an independent consultant with "AC Agility Consulting GmbH".
What demands will the industry face? How will the discipline of cost engineering develop?
Huge changes are taking place, e.g. with new drive systems, with new vehicle construction concepts and with increasing time pressure.
The introduction of artificial intelligence, and AR/VR, i.e. virtual simulation of manufacturing processes with corresponding unit- and location-dependent cost data, is becoming increasingly important and must be available ever faster.
The industry has to face several challenges: for example, it has to offer holistic approaches for decision-making bodies, e.g. according to the total cost of ownership principle. Furthermore, there is enormous pressure to reduce the time between product idea and market maturity (time-to-market).
Why is Tset relevant - in the industry or in today's world in general?
The early "fading in" of costs is crucial in the customer-oriented, economic solution or offer.
The combination of business cost calculation and engineering has always been my focus. That's why I'm involved with Tset. Tset delivers exactly what a decision-maker needs.
